More than 100 new jobs are coming to the Dunbar area of Fort Myers as Crown Linens, a commercial laundry company that cleans linens for hotels, is getting ready to open its doors next month. The company hosted a job fair Wednesday in the hopes of hiring for a series of open positions.
Dunbar resident Lydia Crawford used the opportunity as the first steps to get back into the workforce. “I’m not working right now so, I figured this would be a great opportunity for everyone.” Crawford said opportunities for a decent wage are few and far between. The arrival of a large company like Crown Linen in her backyard is a game changer. “Upbeat about, you know, getting that job,” Crawford exclaimed.
While the career fair catered to anyone looking for work, the focus was centered on the Dunbar community.
“They’re in the community, people can walk to work, ride a bike to work, even if they don’t have any other means of transportation,” said Chairman Lee Dord of Dunbar 21 Century Collaboration and Community Redevelopment Committee. Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson was also not underplaying the significance of the Miami-based company’s expansion to the area. “I do see it front and center as part of our overall effort to address joblessness in our city,” Mayor Henderson said.
For CareerSource officials, it’s job satisfaction at its finest. “That’s the most important thing for people to walk away and say, ‘I found me a job,'” CareerSource official Helen Canicosa said. Some of the jobs up for grabs Wednesday were route drivers, mechanics, and dryer operators. Each of jobs varying in pay, but competitive.
